With the summer upon us once more, many of us will be starting to create that mental checklist about what to pack for the holidays. And while remembering your devices might not be as important as your passport, with technology increasingly at the center our lives, having your gadgets with you can certainly make your trip more enjoyable.
To give you some suggestions about what gadgets might be useful for your holiday this year we’ve compiled a list of holiday tech that might inspire a new purchase or two.
A headphone splitter is a great piece of kit to have handy if you want to share one device with another person – such as watching a movie with someone on the plane. It’s also useful to have around, especially on long journeys if one person’s device runs out of battery life halfway through.
Although this technology can’t strictly be classed as new, the increasing capabilities of headphones means splitters can allow two (or more) pairs of headphones to be connected through one audio jack or, if you both have headphones that work with Bluetooth, a Bluetooth splitter. With either type of splitter, the sound quality will be the same for both users, so no more sharing one earphone each. There are many different types of headphone splitters to choose from online, for example if your devices use an Apple jack instead of a 3.5mm jack, so finding the right option for you shouldn’t be too difficult.
A Key Finder
If you easily misplace your possessions (or travel with someone who does!), then getting hold of a key finder might just be a life saver for you. The key finder comes with a few small square devices that you can attach to items of importance with an adhesive or with a chain.
Then, if these items get lost, you can use Bluetooth and an app on your smartphone to locate any nearby possessions by playing a loud tune to help you find them. Think of ‘find my iPhone’ but for your other valuables. If your device is out of range, the best key finders can even track the location history of the item, so that you have a better idea of where you last had it. What’s more, most key finders can last on a single charge for up to a year, so you don’t need to worry about constantly topping them up.
Wearable UV sensor
With the consequences of overexposure to the sun now well known, understanding how much UV we can take before burning has become a much bigger priority for many of us. Luckily, using the latest wearable technology, you can now track exactly how much UV exposure you are getting and receive a notification when your skin has reached its daily limit.
Some sensors do not even require a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection to connect to your phone, which means you don’t have to worry about having signal to read your results. However, if your phone has network and its location services on, the app can also tell you information such as the humidity, air pollution and pollen levels, helping you plan your day accordingly.
If you’re a keen swimmer then headphones that work underwater are one of the latest innovations to take advantage of. The headphones require a waterproof smart device to work, such as a waterproof iPod shuffle, an Apple watch or SYRYN MP3 Player and can be connected to music apps like Spotify and Pandora using Bluetooth. By keeping this device within two meters of the headphones, they can help to make your workout more enjoyable and with a battery life of around six hours, (depending on make and model), they won’t run out during your swim. Additionally, the headphones can be submerged in depths of up to three meters, in both fresh and saltwater, and have hooks around the ears to keep them in place if you flip when you turn.
A Portable Smartphone Printer
Have thousands of holiday images on your phone that you never do anything with? Well printing off photos from your smartphone camera roll or social media has never been easier. With a portable printer you can connect your social media and instantly turn those photos into colorful prints. This technology uses Bluetooth connectivity and can be used by more than one device, meaning you can set it up at parties, events or while on holiday and everyone can print their favorite moments from their smartphones or tablets. With some portable printers you can even add text, borders, emojis to customize each shot for your friends and family.
IoT-connected security apps
If, like many people, you are always concerned about the safety of your home when you leave for a holiday, then you might like to consider investing in some smart home technology. You can now pair your smart phone to IoT connected security devices installed in your home allowing you to tap into and view your cameras. It provides you with the peace of mind that everything in your home is safe and means you can relax and enjoy your holiday.
