Obama calls out for high-speed mobile innovation in State of the Union

Mobile broadband had a few moments under the spotlight during President Barack Obama's wide-ranging State of the Union address last night. One of the themes of Obama's speech was the new global competitive landscape that America's workforce finds itself in today.

There are millions of "proud men and women who feel like the rules have been changed in the middle of the game. They're right, the rules have changed," he said.

Millions of Cell Phones Shut Down in India

India has blocked services to at least 20 million cell phones because of concerns about security.

The government took the action Tuesday, which was the deadline for owners of the inexpensive, mostly Chinese-made cell phones to purchase additional equipment or face the loss of phone services.

India says the targeted phones lack International Mobile Equipment Identification (IMEI) - a 15 digit number that allows calls to be traced. Indian intelligence agencies have warned that militants could use the untraceable phones to launch attacks.

What services does the SIM allow me to access?

The microprocessor integrated in SIM cards has been specially designed to protect the services to which subscribers have access, to securely store personal data such as contact details, and to provide other applications such as sports info, mobile banking and mobile TV access amongst others. The same mobile phone networks that carry voice calls also carry data exchanged between your operator and your phone's SIM card.

What is the 3G+ network ?

3G+ and 3.5G are different names for HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), a mobile broadband network standard that delivers faster download speeds, up to 21 Megabits/second. This speed is perfect if you download images, videos or music occasionally, surf the Web or are downloading other large files. 3G+ is part of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and a natural evolution for many 3G (third generation) mobile cellular communication systems.

Follow the Mobile User

Today the mobile industry finds itself in a unique position to do right by its users:

Worldwide phone penetration continues to climb at a break-neck pace, with over 4 billion mobile subscribers at last count.1 (In comparison, the PC industry is forecasted to see its sharpest unit decline in history.2) Prevailing economic conditions will accelerate this trend, as users consolidate pricey communication services into cost-effective, all-in-one mobile devices.3 And for the first time ever, half of all new connections to the internet will come from a phone in 2009.4
