Can I purchase a new or replacement SIM card abroad?

You can purchase a new or replacement SIM card when you travel abroad, but it will only work if you have an “open” phone and your phone’s antenna is compatible with the local network. An open phone is one that works with any operator's SIM card, but if you got a discount when you bought your phone from your wireless operator it is probably “locked” so it will not work with other SIM cards.

If you do not have a global plan or just don’t want to use it, one option is to get a basic open phone with a rechargeable prepaid SIM card when you arrive at your destination. That way you will be sure the antenna is compatible, and then you will have an open phone for your future travels.
