One way thieves steal banking and credit cards online is with phishing, an email that directs you to a merchant Web site that looks real but is really operated by criminals. Spyware and malware (malicious software) are nasty programs that someone sneaks onto your computer that can be used to steal credit card account numbers and other things.

How does one catch a computer virus?

The main source of viruses is what is known as Embedded HTML code, which is incorporated in the source code of an apparently normal web page. The user's machine is infected with the virus merely by visiting web pages which have either been designed to include or infected by these HTML macros. It is therefore essential to remain very vigilant with regard to the files you are sent. The best solution is to follow some basic security rules. The first is never to open an attachment which comes from an address that you don't recognize.

Trove of Hotmail Passwords Posted Online

If you use Microsoft's free Hotmail service, it may be time to change your password: Microsoft said Monday that several thousand Hotmail account credentials were posted online over the weekend.

In a statement posted to its Windows Live Spaces blog, Microsoft said the company has determined that the data spill was not the result of a breach of internal Microsoft data, but rather was likely the haul from a phishing scheme.
