What is the level of security of OpenID? Can I improve on this security if required?

OpenID gives access to several thousand sites with a single username and password; however, there are still many gaps in the list.

Many significant sites, including Yahoo!, AOL, Facebook, PayPal, Google and Microsoft have signed up to OpenID, but not all of them allow this new method to be used for access yet. Even so, 160 million internet users have created OpenID accounts, and this is likely to bring faster adoption by websites. If you are going to use a single username and password combination, you really do need to make sure it is secure.

Opinions on the security of OpenID vary. Under OpenID, your security depends on the site where you originally created your account. When you sign in to an OpenID-compatible site, it will redirect to the site where the original registration of user name and password was made. OpenID will never to release personal information, which is stored on a dedicated and secure server.

A solution: register with a site that offers the standard levels of personal data security, like Yahoo! for example. If in doubt select a supplier which offers OpenID or Infocard with strong protection, such as one that offers a USB token rather than just a password. For more information you can go to the OpenID website.
